The detailed work of implementing a research study is often delegated to the Research Coordinator or Nurse. Research staff are frequently responsible for managing grants and budgets, preparing regulatory submissions, writing study protocols, creating data collection forms, managing databases, developing recruiting plans, and supervising others.

The Research Coordinator Training Program (RCTP): Online Orientation for Research Staff (OORS) program is designed to introduce entry-level, university-based staff to an array of roles and responsibilities. OORS is comprised of ten short, focused modules on the following topics:

  • Ethical Consideration
  • Roles & Responsibilities
  • Budget & Finance
  • Recruitment & Retention
  • Regulatory File Maintenance
  • Informed Consent
  • Data Collection & Management
  • Institutional Review Boards
  • Adverse Events & Protocol Deviations
  • Quality Assurance & Quality Control

The ten modules are the self-paced, online orientation portion of the Fundamentals of Research Coordination (FRC) course. Please complete all ten modules before attending the FRC course.

Formal preparation is offered to provide research staff with the skills necessary to be successful in their role. Preparation includes:

  • Orientation to the professional role
  • Training on all the components required in conducting of successful research study
  • Ongoing updates to Federal regulations and guidelines
  • Expert mentoring from program faculty
  • Basic and advanced programs to meet the learning needs of both new and experienced research staff

Nursing Continuing Professional Development (NCPD) Contact Hours

This 2.75 contact hour educational activity is provided by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing (IJHN). The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
